His assistant was Bill Finger, who he pretty much just kept around to fuck.
While his mortal body died in 1998, he went on to become an entity of pure energy who's powers rivaled God himself, and, essentially made him a god in his own way. He still controls the franchise, and even the company, by using the DC CEO as a mere puppet of his will, and giving Christopher Nolan a spark of his own creativity and letting him run with it.
