Seduction of the Innocent was a very intelligently written book by Fredric Wertham that got a lot of naughty people fired, and a lot of writers and artists put out of work. It was about how comic books and their evils were destroying America.
As a result, everybody had to start toning it down. Ever wonder why the Golden Age was so fucking badass and the Silver Age was such a pussy? Yo. Parents got so worried that Batman and Robin were deliberately teaching their kids to be gay, everything got censored until the Comics Code Authority was established.
Children got to read about superheroes, parents got to go to bed at night safe with the knowledge that their children were appropriately bored.
